Depth Filter Cartridgrs
Applications
Depth
filter elements are intended for preliminary microfiltration of neutral or
aggressive liquid and gaseous media (compatible with the material of
construction of the elements) as well as for protection of membrane filter
elements (removal of mechanical contaminants, reduction of bioburden). Depth
filter elements can be used as final filters, if absolute removal of particles
larger in size than a certain value is not required. Mechanisms of depth filtration
Technofilter's
depth filters ensure retention of particles 0.5 to 100 μm in size and are
produced from fibre materials: polypropylene, glass fibre and cellulose, as
well as fine stainless steel meshes. Depending on the nature and thickness of
the filter layer, depth filters retain 95 to 99% of all particles whose size
exceeds the rating of the filter. The process of filtration takes place mainly inside the filter material
and uses mechanisms of mechanical retention as well as adsorption.
In terms of composition and structure, depth filters can be likened to
a bulk labyrinth sieve consisting of extremely small cells with very fine and
infinitely ramified channels. They form a hollow structure whose volume
comprises approximately 70 to 85% of the total volume of the filter, imparting
to the filter a high capacity for retention of microparticles.
Various suspensions, colloids and lipids are trapped while moving by
the long paths of that labyrinth, the mechanical effect being reinforced by the
adsorption effect.
Unlike surface membrane filters, depth filters feature increased dirt
holding capacity and extended service life, which makes them indispensable
virtually in all process systems involving filtration.
Design
The wall of the hollow cylinder of the filter element is the filtering
barrier, consisting of several layers with average pore
size increasing from the outside towards
the inner layers. This arrangement of filter material enables retention of microparticles
across the whole depth of the filtering barrier of the element: larger
particles are retained predominantly in outer layers and smaller particles, in
the dense deep area of the element. Variable porosity of the filtering barrier
results in high dirt holding capacity and long service life of depth elements.
Determination
of technical and operating characteristics
Technical
and operating characteristics of depth filter elements are determined in
accordance with regulations and specifications for the products, Russian and
foreign standards and techniques adopted by Technofilter. Depth
filter elements are checked for hydraulic resistance (dependence of flux on
pressure) and particle retention efficiency. All
elements are washed with deionized water to remove organic and mechanical
contaminants.
