Recommended
by All-Russian Research Institute of food biotechnology for use instead of
carbon columns ("Production process regulations for the production of vodkas
and distillery products". Amendment No 1 to PPR10-12292-99 of 07.11.2005,
Amendment No 2 to PPR10-12292-99 of 12.03.2008, section 8.59) and for
additional treatment of vodkas to improve organoleptic properties (section
8.5.10). The
technology is based on EPSF.UAg0.4 (ЭПСФ.УAg0.4)
cartridge filter elements incorporating activated silver-impregnated cocoa
nutshell carbon. The
technology was patented by Technofilter Research-and-Manufacturing Enterprise
Ltd (Patent No 2222586 "Silver filtration" technique for processing
water-alcohol mixtures and vodkas and cartridge filter).
The
EPSF.UAg0.4 (ЭПСФ.УAg0.4) filter element is a carbon "minicolumn". The space between the
outer shell and the inner core of the element is filled with carbon. The liquid
is fed through the lower opening in the outer shell and is removed through the
upper opening in the inner core. This design takes into account the swelling
ability of carbon in the course of operation and prevents channelling even at high
flow rates.
The
carbon used in the "minicolumn" is very hard (>97%) and has a large surface
area (>1000 m2/g). The impregnation technique used in producing
the carbon rules out migration of silver into the filtrate. A standard
EPSF.UAg0.4 (ЭПСФ.УAg0.4) cartridge element whose height is 250 mm, outer diameter is 70 mm
and inner diameter is 26 mm, contains about 330 g of such activated carbon
having density of about 0.5 g/cm3. 250
mm high modules are thermally welded together to produce elements 500, 750 or
1000 mm high. Depending on required processing rate, the number and height of
filter elements and the grade of the USF (УСФ) filtration system are
selected.
Recommended
operation modes depending on the application of the "Silver filtration"
technology
● As
a replacement for carbon columns
The
recommended optimum processing rate for water-alcohol mixtures is about 3 to 7
dal/h for one 250 mm high EPSF.UAg0.4 (ЭПСФ.УAg0.4)
element. Throughput is 3.500 to 5.000 dal.
●
Additional treatment of vodkas to improve their organoleptic properties
Recommended
processing rate for vodkas downstream of carbon columns is about 8 to 15 dal/h
for one 250 mm high EPSF.UAg0.4 (ЭПСФ.УAg0.4)
element. Throughput is 7.000 to 10.000 dal.
"Silver filtration" systems
Designation
USF (УСФ) filtration systems ("Silver filtration" systems)
are used in the distillery industry and are intended for processing
water-alcohol mixtures and vodkas. The specialists of Technofilter have
developed and certified a range of USF (УСФ) systems having flow rates
of up to 500 dal/h for water-alcohol mixtures and up to 1000 dal/h for vodkas.
Description and make-up of USF (УСФ) systems
The principle of operation of УСФ systems involves
processing water-alcohol mixtures by passing them through prefiltration and
carbon filtration stages, which ensures the required quality of the product.
The system has a pump producing the required pressure and ensuring complete
exhaustion of service capacity of filter elements. The system has shut-off
valves for air discharge as well as valves for water drain and regulating
valves. The outlet of the system is provided with a rotameter to measure the
filtration rate. Inspection windows on the hoods are intended for visual
monitoring of the filling level of the holders. Pressure gauges are used to
measure differential pressures in two stages of the system. The system is
supplied complete with a control panel having an automatic cutoff switch and a
frequency converter which ensures smooth adjustment of filtration rate and
energy-efficient operation of the system and rules out heating-up of the
water-alcohol mixture being filtered.
"Silver
filtration" systems are being successfully operated at 150 enterprises in
Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Azerbaijan, Georgia,
Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Choatia, Mongolia and Brazil.
